We are Tracy & Steven and along with our 2 children we moved to the countryside in the North East of England in 2016. On our smallholding we strive for a more self reliant life by growing our own food, raising our own meat, cooking, preserving & foraging all whilst working full time.

Some of what's growing and a suspicion
Another bush that is coming on by the day is this cape gooseberry - literally growing by the day. It might even need to go in the ground this year and not next like I was planning.
Controversially I am growing tomatoes and potatoes in the same bed. Now this goes against some recommendations but on a website I use for a lot of research, it said to grow them together for a number of reasons, so I am trying it outside. I've taken up the second early potatoes which I am really pleased with and will definitely use next year (British Queen) and I've planted tomatoes (and peppers) in their place.
There is still one row of spuds to come up and the back section is sunflowers and more tomatoes with catch crop of spinach in there.

Such a geek
There is an outside section which is attached to a high point in between my vegetable plot and the greenhouse, which is the section of land I want to know most about.
This morning before work, I downloaded the data which is from Boxing Day until today and (here's the geeky bit) I found some interesting results.

My computer screen |
It tells me what the dew point is, which I remember reading about once in how it related to veg and growing - I've since forgotten so will research it again.
I can set an alert on it to warn me if the temperature drops below a certain amount, meaning I will have to cloche/fleece the seedlings when I get them in the ground.
Inside the kitchen the temperature has ranged from 19.3 to 26.1 which is when I've been having a good cooking session. The Aga is always on so that room is always warm. Heart of the house :).
I can find out all about relative and Absolute pressure - no idea about this one?!
Wind gusts last night were recorded but only at 30mph which I was shocked about as it woke me up 3 times and was SO loud.
Also we've had 16ml of rain since I switched it on back in December.
I do love things like this and will happily sit looking at the data for a good hour or so, probably terribly sad, but that's me :D.
I also got a tiller for Christmas - aren't I a very lucky girl!?

Growing update
Thursday, 12 May 2016
An unplanned productive evening.
I set about in the veg plot digging over part of the remaining bed that I've been avoiding. If I take it an hour at a time, it's more manageable than the thought of doing it all at once. It's about 1/3 to 1/2 done now so I am really pleased. I've added more rotted manure in to the bit I've done tonight and hopefully come the weekend I will get the rest of the plants in there. Then that leaves one more bed plus a space that's previously been used for burning god knows what. That will become my potato bed very soon.
So in between the veg plot, I had a guy come and collect some manure which combined with another couple over the last week has made an even bigger dent in the muck heap. Once he had gone and I'd done what I set out to in the veg plot, I spent an hour in the field picking up a barrow of poo. It's back breaking work but it was actually quite therapeutic as it is so quiet, so relaxing that in the end I almost enjoyed it.
In the greenhouse the tomato plants have started showing lots of the yellow flowers which will become the fruit so I am now getting excited!! How long until I can harvest my first tomato!! Rhubarb & asparargus were divine, I wonder if the tomatoes will be!
Finally I watered my plants then put the animals to bed before collapsing into my own bed, ready to do it all again the next day, what could be better!

Dad started digging the bed for me last night which spured me in to doing more tonight. |

Wonderful March weekend
The weekend's fly by anyway however this weekend especially. Friday night we celebrated the birthday of Steven's dad with the family. A lovely night though meant no time to do anything at home.
Saturday I rode out on the morning then it seems I blinked and the day was over! We have had lots of people interested in our horse manure! So both Saturday and Sunday saw us helping people load up their trailers and bags with lots of lovely manure. We have another one coming tomorrow too. So far, even though it is free, people have left us some LED lights for our outbuilding and 18 pigeon breasts for the freezer. Really kind and we shall be trying the pigeon on Friday so if anyone has any suggestions then they are most welcome.
Today we have been sorting out the pigs home for when we get them. We have decided they can live in the copse that we've been taking the trees down from. We will mesh round the trees that are left and have started penning off the area they will be allowed in.
I've also managed to get quite a few more seeds in the greenhouse and half of another bed weeded outside. Beans and peas will be going in that one. In the greenhouse I have purple sprouting broccoli, cabbages and onions coming through and looking strong. I've put some more tomatoes in, sweetcorn, broad beans and dwarf beans today.
The onion sets we planted a couple if weeks ago, we checked today to see if they had rotted but so far they look ok with roots coming out of the bottom.
Finally we have, well Steven has, cleared out the paving slabs from behind the current compost/muck heap bins and stacked them neatly along side them. This means once we have tidied out the rest of the rubbish bits you can see in the picture, we will be able to use that as a compost muck heap too. Great stuff. Lovely weekend though all went a bit too quick for my liking.
