Thank you Steven

The other day Kev over on An English Homestead was talking about the wooden items he'd made for Christmas.  They were fabulous and in telling him so, I commented that my husband makes things out of wood, in his own style.  I've posted before about the room he built in the barn which he made into his gym, the raised beds he is in the middle of doing, the fences that he's put up single handily, the chicken brooders, pens, duck house and sheds that he's put together by the beg, stealing or borrowing (ok not stealing), the signs that he created when we built Chickenville, the egg holder when our hens started producing, the fireplace that we were quoted hundreds of pounds for that he made for £16 from 2nd hand wood, the tack room and many other thing.
On the same day Kev was posted about his latest wooden goings on, Steven walked in from his garage workshop with this little beauty.

I think we too may be moving in to making our own Christmas presents, although I wouldn't want to wrap this.  How fabulous.  It has pride of place in the kitchen.  The sign on the front was bought for me by my Mum for Christmas...I have no ideas why ;).

I do love seeing the creativity of people to help sustain their lives, for whatever reason and it whatever manner.
Brilliant :)

Pics below of a few of the items I've mentioned.  It was only supposed to be a short post but I got carried away - so as the title says, thank you Steven, you've done us proud in our first year xx

The weather today remains milder than you would expect for January.  4.8C in the barn this morning and a bright, dry day all round.  The cold is coming though!

  1. What a lovely post. You are so lucky having a husband that can and does make things. That shelf is lovely and i like the little plaque too. Give my oh his due he occasionally has a go. He did my shed for me but has said he would not do it again. I am therefore leaving matters a few weeks before mentioning the matter of a wooden smokehouse. I am not under any circumstances paying over 1K for one. I shall just have to choose my moment carefully. Take care x

  2. Fabulous stuff. I LOVE the kitchen shelf and the fire surround is gorgeous! It is wonderful to be able to make stuff out of recycled, reclaimed or unwanted materials. You, me and others are very lucky to have handy and creative husbands. Mine is just a skin flint and refuses to pay for anything if he can help it, bit like Ste I think. God love him! x

    1. Yes a lot like Ste :) I prefer to use items that can be reused where we can. I love doing things with the kids like that and can't wait to see what this year brings. We wouldn't change them for the world! xx

  5. So many beautiful things here, especially the shelf! I was admiring the woodwork but then stopped in my tracks when I saw the Vorwerks. They are stunning! I immediately went to google but it doesn't look like we have them for sale here in the U.S.? Are they a rare breed where you are?

    1. Hiya - yes they are a rare breed so I am doing my bit to keep them well :) We have 2 cockerels that get on well together thankfully and 4 hens. They hang round with a goose, who thinks he is a Vorwerk :\ :) Thank you for your kind comments!

  6. Looks like he has a good set of carpentry skills there! Some great items. Being able to do this type of thing on the homestead makes life so much easier! Also using second hand wood is great as well and gives things such character. He could easily sell those on etsy.

  9. Well done Ste, your work is impressive. Tracey you lucky girl, make him work while he's got good eyesight!! My hubby is brilliant at making anything but his eyesight is so bad he spends longer looking for his glasses then making anything now! LOL

We have decided to put the area where the pigs were a few years ago back to grass.  They did a great job of eating what was there, weeds and...
