Egg production down

We have finally started to see a decline in egg production. We've gone from a corker of a day last week with a record 23 down to today's low of 8.
The middle hens have eaten one of their own as I saw them at it when I went in. Therefore we've no idea how many there could have been.
This cold snap we have had will be affecting them too. The weather has a lot to do with the amount they produce.
It's not got above freezing all day.

  1. Wow that is quite a dip, chic. I know what you mean, though. We used to get between 5 and 6 each day from May and through last summer and then from October the decline began. We currently get two a day from five chooks but with the days getting longer I am sure there will be an increase soon for all of us.

    1. It's interesting to record them as I know you do, as you notice the variances more. Roll on summer :)

  2. The weather will not be helping at all. It was -3 at 6am thiz morning and was perishing. Very cold again tonight. However it is getting that little bit lighter. My grandparents always used to string a couple of cabbage stalks snd remnant leAves up in the chicken house to keep them entertained and give some other interest as well as warm bran mash at night before tucking them in. Hopefully it will just be a little dip compared to what it could be. Take care Pattypan c

  6. We have the opposite problem over here - with temps over 40deg C it affects our egg production - fortunately we always have enough for our own use. Hopefully your temps start to increase a little and your chooks get back into the swing of laying. We haven't had them attack one yet and hopefully won't - don't know what you do to stop that - hopefully someone will comment with some suggestiuons for you!

    1. I read on another blog that using wooden eggs stops them so we will maybe try that. Thanks :)

  7. Let's hope the bird flu problems will disappear before springtime and hens can get on with what they do best....scratching around in the dirt, taking dust baths and laying gorgeous eggs. x

    1. I can't wait to see that again. I feel like giving them the whole place to roam around in after their confinement! x
